Release Notes

What's actually changed on this site, in plain English, newest first. Internal housekeeping (CI, refactors, test infrastructure) is left out; this is what a visitor would notice.

September 2026

  • Sep 21: Added three guides: TFSA and US Taxes, Explained, RESP and US Taxes, Explained, and The Canada-US Tax Treaty Tie-Breaker Rules, Explained.
  • Sep 18: Added the Sticky-State Residency Checker: see what could still make California, New York, Virginia, New Mexico, or South Carolina treat you as a resident after you've left, plus a new Sticky States, Explained guide.
  • Sep 5: The Offer & Relocation Comparator now computes real federal + provincial (all 13) or federal + state (all 50) income tax from 2026 brackets, instead of asking you to enter your own combined marginal rate. Moving Back gained a destination-province tax picture (basic personal amount, bracket range) alongside the existing exit-tax checklist.
  • Sep 2: Added a homepage preview of the CoastFIRE Calculator's chart, a new "income gap during a move" stress test on the calculator itself, a How Parallel49 Compares guide, and reorganized the Guides directory by persona instead of one flat list.
  • Sep 2: Added a homepage trust section (on-device data, no ads, sourced figures) and pre-filled the hero calculator with example numbers instead of blank dashes.
  • Sep 2: Decluttered the Tools menu and added site-wide privacy controls.
  • Sep 1: Redirected any plain-HTTP request to HTTPS at the edge.

Late August 2026

  • Aug 30: Sorted the "All tools" directory by persona instead of showing all 11 tools with equal weight, and added a dated "verified against CRA/IRS/SSA sources" stamp to each calculator, linking to its own Methodology & Sources section.
  • Aug 30: Added citation-grade sourcing to several guides, and enforced real RRIF/RMD minimum-withdrawal floors in the Drawdown Optimizer.
  • Aug 30: Reframed the FBAR/FATCA Action Item as a threshold estimate rather than a filing directive.
  • Aug 29: Added an emergency-fund input to the CoastFIRE Calculator.
  • Aug 28: Added missing US Estate Tax citations to Methodology & Sources.
  • Aug 27: Added the PFIC Risk Checker, with its own guide and sourcing.
  • Aug 26: Added the US Exit Tax Estimator, and fixed several math/logic edge cases across the retirement and tax tools.

Mid-to-late August 2026

  • Aug 25: Added the Offer & Relocation Comparator and Norbert's Gambit & FX Spread Calculator, each with its own guide.
  • Aug 23–24: Added the FBAR/FATCA tracker, the Methodology & Sources page, and a branded PDF export. The site was rebranded from a single CoastFIRE calculator to Parallel49 ("Two Currencies, One Number") with a Why Parallel49? page explaining the name.
  • Aug 22: Added a "last independently verified" date to every page, spouse/partner mode, a Roth-conversion window detector, and a historical-backtest chart mode. Externalized every inline script and added security headers (CSP hardening).
  • Aug 21: Added the grouped Tools navigation and mobile drawer, and completed a security remediation pass (XSS hardening, share-link integrity, storage minimization).

Early-to-mid August 2026

  • Aug 16–20: Split from a single CoastFIRE calculator into a multi-tool site: added Compare Scenarios, tool search, a completion tracker, one-time life events in the projection, the Guides section, and the homepage "Not sure where to start?" quiz.
  • Aug 17: Added Monte Carlo mode and the Drawdown-Order Optimizer.
  • Aug 2: First version published, as a single cross-border CoastFIRE calculator.

See Methodology & sources for what backs each number, or head to the CoastFIRE Calculator to see where you stand.
